Soursop is also produced in all tropical parts of Africa, especially in Eastern Nigeria, The Plateau and The Democratic Republic of Congo, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It is in the same genus, Annona, as cherimoya and is in the Annonaceae family.
Its main virtue is in its active ingredient, the acetogenin. Soursop (Annona muricata) leaves are the most beneficial part of the tree. They have acetogenin containing compounds such as bullatacin, asimisin, and squamocin. Acetogenin acts as an anti-feedant.
